Anatomy of a Shoe

1 min read

Most product photography shows you a shoe from the outside — one angle, good lighting, done. It tells you almost nothing about why the shoe feels the way it does on foot.

So we pulled one apart. Not metaphorically — frame by frame, the upper lifting away from the midsole, the sockliner peeling back to show the foam underneath, the outsole finally separating to reveal the lug pattern that never sees daylight once the shoe is laced up.

“A shoe is really three or four separate engineering decisions wearing a single silhouette.”

What you find is that a shoe is really three or four separate engineering decisions wearing a single silhouette: an upper tuned for fit and breathability, a midsole tuned for rebound, an outsole tuned for grip on a specific kind of ground. None of them are visible on the shelf. All of them are why the shoe feels different from the one next to it.

That's the idea behind the homepage — not a hero shot, but the actual construction, in motion, so you can see what you're paying for before you ever try it on.
